Spotify is, without a doubt, the most popular audio streaming platform in the world. Its service is exceptional, and nowadays, everyone has the application installed on their phones, computers, or laptops. For such a name, the service it provides is almost spotless! While that might sound quite clichéd, it is true; and if you are reading this article, you already know it is true. But “How to Change Spotify Username” is the most demandable question regarding Spotify in Google.
While there are many positive features in the platform, there are a few quirks that you will find annoying. After all, nothing on this planet is “perfect to the t.” There are numerous other social, music, and gaming platforms that let you change your name at will, and such examples are Facebook, Steam, and many more. However, one of Spotify’s quirks is that the platform does not allow you to change your username once you have registered the first one!
There is no doubt that this little feature, or rather a setback, is hugely annoying, especially when you register your account with your email. Spotify makes you use a generated and rather ugly name instead of your own. The given names are often a part of your email followed by random numbers; that is just a big “no-no.” However, even though there is no way Spotify will allow you to change your username, there is a way to show a different name than what your username is.
- Facebook –
There are virtually no platforms and games on the planet today that do not allow a Facebook connection or synchronization if you want to. This merge system is also available for Spotify, and it is through this, that you can show a different name than your Spotify username.
- Through Desktop Application –
The first thing you need to do is download the Spotify application on your desktop or laptop. Next, when you open the app, you will see a down button on the top-right corner of your screen; click on it, and it will take you to the settings. Next, you need to find the “Connect to Facebook” button under the Social tab in the settings.
If you have your Facebook account at the ready, then sign up, and your accounts on the two different platforms will merge, and you will have a brand new Facebook name showing where the username should have been!
- Through a Phone –
Using your phone to change your display name is similar to what you do on a desktop. It does not matter whether you are using an Android or an iPhone since the application is the same.
First off, open the Spotify app and go to “Your Library”; then tap on the Settings button on the top-right corner of your screen. When you are in settings, find Facebook under Social, and click on “Connect to Facebook.” You should be able to log in once you have given the correct credentials.
One thing to note is that on your phone, if any other account other than yours is signed in on Facebook, then Spotify will try to connect to that one instead of yours. So be sure to log in to your account before merging the two versions.
N.B. If you are using a tablet, you should have a similar experience to a phone.
- Create a New Account –
The only possible way to truly change your Spotify username is to change your account and make a new one entirely. Spotify officials have already confirmed the statement. The company uses an old way where your username is your identity in their database instead of a hex code or your email. The old way is why you cannot change your name since doing so will collide with other usernames. Also, changing usernames would mean changing their entire database schema, which is more hassle than what it’s worth.
However, creating a new account is time-consuming, and not to mention that you need to migrate everything you have in your current one. The process is not easy, nor is it quick. To successfully migrate an account, you need to contact customer service and ask them to migrate everything. Also, getting a hold of them is not an easy task since you need to contact them through their Twitter account. However, recently, they have added a customer service page on their website if you do not want to go to Twitter or do not own a Twitter account.
When you create a new account, you will still be able to merge with your Facebook account. However, while Facebook lets you choose custom display names, it does not offer much privacy, and you can overcome that by signing up with your email address.
- The process –
If you want to open a new Spotify account, you need to go to their sign-up page first. You can choose the signup process, whether email or Facebook. Since we are talking about username flexibility, decide to sign up with Facebook by entering your credentials.
Next, you must choose your new username that other users do not already take. Here, you can either do your name or allow Spotify to auto-generate a name that will 100% look ugly. But that does not matter since you will have Facebook show a display name instead. After the signup, you are done and can now close the application wizard.
After the new account is set up, you must contact a Spotify service provider to migrate your old account to your new one. Of course, if you are a premium user, you need to change yourself for security reasons. While customer service and status change are time-consuming, it is a sure thing.
It would help if you migrated status and friends since Spotify customer service can only migrate your playlist for you and nothing else.
Don’t you like your username?
You can create a custom display name that replaces the username where it shows on your profile, app, playlists, and Friend Activity.
Note: You can’t log in with your display name (you can use your email for that).
- You can create a new account and choose a display name in the ‘What should we call you?’ field; during sign-up,
Note: Be sure to cancel any subscriptions on the existing account. Also, you can’t transfer any saved music/playlists, but you can permanently save/create them again. - Or, you can connect to Facebook to display your Facebook name.

While it may seem that the username hiccup is a significant annoyance, you need to look at the grand scheme of things. Spotify is a great music streaming platform that brings all music and friends together. Compared to that, being unable to change your username is a common hiccup. Customer service is excellent and will help you with almost anything possible in their rulebook. So, these processes are the only way to change your display name up to this date.
